Chili Cook-Off Rules
- One entry per household or team.
- Make at least 2 quarts: enough for about 50 small tasting cups.
- Home-cooked only; no store-bought chili.
- Any style counts: meat, veggie, vegan, red, white, green, beans, or no beans. Up to you.
- Each entry must check in at the welcome table.
What Cooks Bring
- Chili, fully cooked and hot, in a crockpot or slow cooker with its lid (required to keep it hot and safe)
- Crockpot on a "keep warm" or low setting; no open flames or burners
- A ladle or serving spoon with a trivet or plate to lay it on. (Primarily self-serve voting)
- A flier on the table promoting your chili and MUST list ALL ingredients. No list, no entry.
- Optional toppings: cheese, sour cream, onions, cornbread, crackers, etc.
- Cooler with ice for any cold toppings
- Arrive between 4- 4:15 pm so every pot is hot when tasting opens at 4:15 pm
- Electricity, cords, and power strips provided
What Organizers Provide
Tables end to end along the side of the lot (3-4, depending on the number of contestants)
Power strips and outdoor extension cords
Voting Packs: 3 Tasting cups, Small Spoons, Tickets (75-100)
Contestant Ticket Buckets with Lids
Trash bin at the end of the table
Prizes: (e.g., a trophy, a golden ladle, or Gift Cards)
Tasting
Tasting runs for one hour, and everyone moves down the table in one direction.
Tasters pick up a tasting kit at the welcome table: 3 small cups, a spoon, and voting token(s).
A volunteer or taster self-serves a 1–2 oz sample; tasters don't dip their own spoons into pots.
Cooks may stay, serve, and describe their chili to those interested.
When a pot runs out, it stays in the vote; leave the number card up.
Tasting closes at 5:15 pm.
Voting & Judging
One token, one vote. A voting bucket sits next to each pot. Every taster gets one token (a ticket) and drops it in the bucket of their favorite chili. At close, a volunteer counts each cup with a second person watching.
The three Chilis with the most votes win 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
